Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot
75cl * 14.0% ABV * Tuscany, Italy
From a handful of vineyards surrounding the exalted Bolgheri region, Guidalberto was created in 2000 in order to show what the estate could do with Merlot and to offer drinkers a wine for younger consumption than the the flagship Sassicaia. Hence its playful nom de plume of "Sassicaia’s little brother".
“It has a satisfying drinkability, with its own personality different from Sassicaia, but similar in flavour and elegance. Its complexity and structure determine its great potential for ageing and refinement over a long period of time.” Carlo Paoli, Tenuta San Guido General Manager.
Guidalberto is carefully matured in 225 litre barriques (80% French oak, 20% American oak) for 15 months. The nose abounds with ripe, fragrant fruit and sweet spice. Plum, strawberry, blackcurrant and forest floor reveal the interplay of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, which constitute equal parts of the blend this year. The palate is juicy and supple, with admirable freshness given the warm vintage, framed by fine tannins. A juicy, sumptuous Super Tuscan.
Drink 2022-2030.
“Deep, lustrous crimson but with no blueish tints. Very heady, voluptuous nose but not at all sweet. In fact it finishes dry with an attractive balsamic note. Excellent balance and sappy structure – very much a food wine….Good, serious wine that is usefully well advanced.” Jancis Robinson“The 2020 Guidalberto is a gorgeous, classy wine. Less opulent than it can be, the 2020 impresses with its energy and drive…This is a terrific showing, especially considering the recent bottling. It's a fine relative value in Bolgheri's high-rent district.” 92 points, Antonio Galloni
