Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon
75cl * 13.5% ABV * Sauternes, France
The beauty of Sauternes is that it can be served at both the beginning and the end of the meal. Equally as delicious with pâté, roasted fennel or something like duck, as it is with slices of peach and strawberries or a delicate apricot tart... and that's not even counting the Roquefort and other pungent blue cheeses that could before and after the meal too!
Château Lafon sits within the Yquem enclave of vineyards... we'll let that settle in before adding that Lafon is made from not just these vines, but from others in Sauternes that sit next to those of Château Guiraud, one of the First Growth châteaux of Bordeaux (and famous for its Sauternes). The wine of Lafon is aged in Yquem barrels too, just to add to the glamorous pedigree.
Grape yields, however, are some of the most feeble in the world of wine and the effort required to make a single bottle can include harvesting through the vineyards as many as six times in order to only gather the grapes affected with noble rot.
Still, the resulting wine is a joyous blend of crème caramel, apricot and nectarine with a touch of tang and a wonderful long finish. Drinking splendidly now, but will cellar for a further five to 10 years.
