It's not often we get surprised by a product that comes across our paths - but when someone told us about Hurt Liqueur we knew we had to investigate it further... and now we're delighted to stock it!
So what tickled our fancy? Hurt Liqueur is made from hurts (the local name for wild blueberries), which are only found up in the Hurt Wood (or Hurtwood), which is only a stone's throw from our shop here in the Surrey Hills. The makers of Hurt Liqueur believe the Hurtwood was named after the berries themselves, though other local historians think it comes from the Old English word 'chert' or 'churt' that describes a rough area of gorse, bracken and broom. Either way, we love the fact that there's a local berry that can make such a delicious liqueur.
The intense and fruity berries are a form of wild blueberry and are abundant in the forest in the summer months, loving the sandy terrain of the area. The liqueur has been blended to be a fantastic match to all sparkling wines, including Champagne, Cava and Prosecco, but we love it with English sparkling wine or just sipped out of a hip flask on a frosty wintry walk.
Dry, with layers of cassis and blackberry leaf - not too sweet but would be rather fun as a shot over good-quality vanilla ice cream.
