Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot
75cl * 13% ABV * Pauillac, Bordeaux, France
Château Mouton Rothschild was formerly known as Château Brane-Mouton, but took its name when it was bought by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1853. Rothschild wanted to serve his own wine to his prestigious guests, hence buying the highly acclaimed estate, and - just as he did - wine from this First Growth château has been served to prestigious guests ever since.
The 2005 has an elegant, complex nose that combines refined notes of oak, toast and vanilla with intense, wild berry fruit. Touches of mint and spice bring freshness.
The palate is both powerful and substantial, revealing attractively close-knit, juicy and succulent tannins combined with concentrated blackcurrant and blackberry flavours.
The finish is very long, carried by a touch of sweetness and the perfect expression of rich, ripe Cabernet Sauvignon typical of great Pauillac vintages.
As with all bottles of Mouton-Rothschild since 1945, the label for the 2005 includes specially commissioned artwork. This vintage's artist is the great Italian sculptor Giuseppe Penone. Born in 1947, he's one of the most original artists of our time. In his drawing for the label of Mouton Rothschild 2005, he has chosen to evoke the vine-grower’s “green fingers”, a living expansion of the vine leaf and at the same time the splayed hand of the drinker – soon to close round a glass of Mouton!
