Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot
75cl * 14.5% ABV * Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France
Only 2500 cases of this Saint-Emilion grand cru are made each year by the Vauthier family, and we are lucky enough to have five of them (at point of writing!).
Made from 30 year old vines planted in the clay and sandy/gravelly soil of the area, the wine is kept in 85% new oak for about 18 months having been fermented in stainless-steel vats.
On the nose there's blueberries and creamy coconut milk, black olives and coffee bean. The palate is powerful (unsurprising for a 14.5% ABV wine), but it's very smooth with lots of blue fruit, some black olive tapenade and a hint of cassis. There's a great length to it too with more of the coffee bean on the finish. Absolutely delicious and perfect with roast beef or venison.
Drinking well now and will keep til 2031 at least.
