Famille Perrin is a leading wine producer and négociant in the southern Rhône Valley. The business was established in 1997, and today makes wines from some of the region's most famous appellations, including Vacqueyras, Gigondas and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Coming from one hectare of 130-year-old Grenache vines grown on sandy soil (quite rare in the Rhone), L’Argnee has elegance, length and outstanding complexity: concentrated raspberry and blackcurrant aromas mingle with an undertone of liquorice, following through to sweet, spiced plum on the palate.

The 2017 harvests for both the northern and southern Rhône were small but extremely high in quality, resulting in elegant, concentrated wines with sophisticated tannins and depth. The 2017 will age well, and it's such an impressive wine it deserves to be better known. It is drinking gorgeously now and will certainly age easily through to 2030+.

Pair with wild mushrooms, veal, or beef stew and serve at 15°C in big wine glasses.

Critics Reviews

17++/20 points Jancis Robinson

Dense, thick palate. Compressed nose. A coiled spring. There’s some liquorice and aniseed character if you really look for it, but this is quite muscle-bound and brooding at this stage. Richard Hemming MW 10/2018

95 points Decanter Magazine

“This wine is pure Grenache from 1 hectare of pre-Phylloxera vines on sandy soil - very rare in the southern Rhône. No new oak is used. It's a deep, vinous, intense and spicy wine that's really drinkable, chiselled and intense. It's medium-bodied with a really fine, aerial freshness within. A lovely deep acid line runs through the ample ripe tannins, leading to a long finish. The 2017 will age well, and it's such an impressive wine it deserves to be better known”. Matt Walls 10/2018

95-97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"Made from the same pre-Phylloxera parcel of Grenache, it's incredibly intense this vintage, boasting enough purple raspberries, black cherries and Asian spices to send me almost into sensory overload. Yet for all the flavour, this full-bodied wine is velvety-silky in feel, with a long, elegant finish." Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate 30/08/2019

95-97 points Jeb Dunnuck

“A big step up over the La Gille releases, the 2017 Gigondas L’Argnée Vieilles Vignes offers sensational notes of camphor, kirsch, blackcurrants, violets, and bouquet garni. Medium to full-bodied, structured, and concentrated, it has plenty of tannins as well as sensational balance.” Jeb Dunnuck 16/08/2019

94 points Vinous

"Opaque ruby. Highly expressive aromas of mineral-tinged red berries, incense and liquorice candy, along with a suave floral nuance that builds as the wine opens up. Appealingly sweet and seamless on the palate, offering penetrating raspberry, cherry, spicecake and candied lavender flavours that are braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Finishes silky, sweet and impressively long, with gentle tannins and lingering floral pastille and exotic spice notes." Jancis Robinson 20/02/2020
