Coudoulet is often called 'Baby Beaucastel' as the 30 hectare plot, also owned and run by Beaucastel's Perrin family, is located just east of the famous Chateau de Beaucastel. The soils here are also carpeted with galets, the region’s archetypal pudding stones, which help the grapes to ripen by retaining the daytime heat and releasing it at night. Plus, this blend mimics the family's Chateauneuf-du-Pape's recipe, with its high percentage of Mourvedre.
The 2018 vintage had exceptional weather conditions that allowed a perfect flowering and an abundant grape output. There were few rainy episodes at the end of spring, but the good weather then lasted until harvest, which took place under idyllic conditions. The 2018 is deep ruby red, with intense aromas of stewed raspberries, herbs and spices. On the palate, it is full-bodied with great depth and concentration. This elegant wine has a long, lingering finish.
'An accessible and succulent Cotes de Rhône with gentle smoke and layers of garrigue, earth, leather and blackberries. No need to wait to drink this, it's one to crack open and enjoy.' 90/100 Jane Anson for Decanter
