75cl * 13.5% ABV * Côtes de Beaune, Burgundy, France
The Latour family are long established in Burgundy's wine trade. They began as vine growers in the village of Aloxe-Corton as early as 1760s and went on to establish today's business, Maison Louis Latour, in 1797. Today they are one of the region's most famous names, creating wines from their own 50 hectare domaine in the Côte d'Or and from grapes and wines purchased through the negociant arm of the business. They also produce all their own barrels at their small, traditional cooperage in Savigny-Lès-Beaune.
The company has been in family ownership for 11 generations and is now led by the seventh person to take the name Louis Latour. He is ably supported by head winemaker Jean Charles Thomas and domaine director Christophe Deola.
Puligny-Montrachet wine is made in the Côtes de Beaune area of Burgundy between Meursault, to the north, and Chassagne-Montrachet, to the south. There are four Grand Cru vineyards within Puligny-Montrachet and 17 Premier Cru vineyards.
Puligny-Montrachet tends to be a more restrained style than Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet with a wonderful minerality leading to an elegance of flavour.
The Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru is a blend of wines from different individual Premier Cru sites within the village. Maison Louis Latour carefully screens the selection of Premier Cru wines that make up this blend choosing only those that offer sufficient maturity and consistency over the years. The resulting wine combines the strengths of each of its component parts giving a wine with balance, elegance and complexity.
This wine exhibits complex fruity and floral aromas particularly of exotic fruits and honey. On the palate it is well balanced with subtle touches of vanilla. This Premier Cru has a lovely richness and a good structure.
