75cl * 14% ABV * Bierzo, Spain
This is from a small, family-owned vineyard in north-west Spain, where the winemaker – Luis Peique – is a professional oenologist and works for a large producer in Ribera del Duero. He has turned Bierzo into an emerging region and championed Mencia as a native Spanish variety with huge potential. Mencia (like Pinot Noir) is a difficult grape to work with, but when sensitively managed can yield some very pretty and delicate characteristics, yet with underlying power. 60-year-old vines provide fruit purity rather than concentration. 7 months in French, Russian and American oak lends weight and smoke to the crisp, mineral structure.
