Zinfandel, Petite Syrah, Carignan, Mataro
75cl * 14.5% ABV * Lytton Springs, California, USA
Ridge's first vines were planted in 1885, but it took almost 100 years for the producer to wow the world: its wines swept the board at Steven Spurrier's 1976 Judgement of Paris competition. Ever since, Ridge has produced wines that have been rightfully regarded alongside the finest Bordeaux blends and Burgundy's top whites.
However, Zinfandel has become another jewel in the Ridge crown and Lytton Springs is planted largely with this principle variety, with Petite Syrah, Carignan and Mataro lending their own structure, perfume and grip. The 2019 was a rare harvest in that it stretched well into autumn - the last grapes were picked in October. This is in the same vein as Geyserville, although shows a little more aromatic spice and oak under a wash of pure, sweet plummy fruit. Gloriously energetic. Drink to 2036.
