A sumptuous Second Growth from one of the standout vintages of the past few decades - on top of this, on release Poyferré was regarded as one of the stars of 2009 (and the best performing Poyferré in memory). A deep, inky purple, it offers a hedonistic nose of pure blackberry and blueberry fruit, graphite and bitter chocolate. Opulent and rich, the multi-layered palate never seems to end.
“A soaring bouquet of creme de cassis, charcoal, graphite and spring flowers is followed by a super-concentrated wine with silky tannins, stunning amounts of glycerin, a voluptuous, multilayered mouthfeel and nearly 14% natural alcohol.” 100/100 Points Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (tasted December 2011)
“The greatest wine I’ve ever tasted from this address is the 2009 Léoville Poyferré, which is a step up over both the 2000 and the 2010.” 100/100 Points Jeb Dunnuck (tasted February 2018)
Drinking beautifully now, there is plenty of scope for maturation, with a peak around 2050. Traditional accompaniments to this would include a game pie or pithivier or well-hung grouse, but simply cooked roasted meat would also do a nicely.
