Since 1998, philosophy graduate and part-time surfer Johan Reyneke has been making wine to the west of the town of Stellenbosch. The winery is a sister brand to Boekenhoutskloof, who are behind the perennially popular Chocolate Block wines. The estate vinyards contains two plots of old vine Chenin Blanc that date back to 1970 and are managed biodynamically, with minimal intervention. Large oak barrels and extensive lees ageing techniques are practiced. This is full and rich, showing ripe citrus and orchard fruit, as well as Chenin's characteristic hint of honey and spice. Wonderfully fresh on the palate, this is best suited to short-to-medium term drinking. Pair with baked white fish or creamy sauces.
