75cl * 14% ABV * Crete, Greece
Zacharias Diamantakis has something of a cult following in Greek wine circles, who snap up as much of his production as they can. Here, he blends the familiar Syrah (which thrives in the Cretan soil and climate) with the unfamiliar Mandilari, a somewhat wild and tannic varietal that is well-suited to blending and ageing. The result is an intense, glossy wine with notes of forest fruit, cherry, vanilla, chocolate, and roasted meat. Proof, if it were needed, that the wines of Greece offer fantastic value and very interesting drinking. Pair with spicy tomato sauces, grilled red meats, cold cuts - this is very adaptable.
