The jagged limestone peaks of the “Dentelles de Montmirail” jut out of the landscape and tower over the small pretty village of Gigondas - a place that I have always had a great affection for since working a vintage there over 20 years ago.
The jewel in the crown situated in the very south of the appellation is L’Argnee. A tiny 1 hectare plot of 130-year-old pre-Phyloxera vines that this has been called ‘the Chambolle of Gigondas’ by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, which compares it with some of the finest red Burgundy – and gave it a whopping 97 points to boot. A biodynamically farmed plot that is lovingly cared for, this is the wine from Perrin that those “in the know” hunt down.
L’Argnee has elegance, length and outstanding complexity: on the nose concentrated raspberry and blackcurrant aromas mingle with an undertone of liquorice, following through to sweet, spiced plum and cherry liqueur on the palate.
This will certainly age easily through to 2033, but treat your wine with care – just 1200 bottles a year are produced!
Serve at 15C – 16C with roast beef, wild mushrooms, richer meat dishes or stews.
