Mauro is based where the Ribera del Duero wine region starts. However, due to a local mayor not filling in the correct paperwork it cannot use the Ribera name on the label. A small bureaucratic mistake that has driven winery owners up the wall ever since.
The main claim to fame of this winery is their “rockstar” winemaker: Mariano García who was chief winemaker at neighbouring winery Vega Sicilia from 1968 to 1998, in chefing terms this would be equivalent to holding three Michelin stars for three decades as Vega Sicilia is one of Spain’s most revered and expensive wines with Unico (Vega’s main wine) retailing at upwards of £250 a bottle.
Mariano has brought his expertise to Mauro and this vintage shows Intense aromas of blue fruit and redcurrants, hints of coffee, leather and cocoa powder. This all leads to a palate bursting with clean vanilla wood and super ripe red fruit flavours.
It's drinking now but will continue to improve for another decade, Mariano feels it was the best Mauro he has ever made – 90% Tempranillo and 10% Syrah. All the grapes are organic and the wine was fermented using the wineries natural yeasts.
