Santa Digna was the name of the wayside crosses at a property in Spain. These crosses were used to mark boundaries, symbolizing good luck and protection for those setting out for remote lands. They were also used to name Miguel Torres first property in Chile and the first wine produced from this land.
When he set about obtaining Fairtrade status for his Santa Digna range, Miguel Torres Jr offered the local grape growers three times their usual going rate - initially they refused, thinking there would be a catch!
Chilean Merlot deserves more than its reputation as just an affordable red. Santa Digna Merlot was obtained after several years of experimentation in plantations with different climates. Aged for six months in American oak casks until bottling with no type of filtration. Deep in colour, smooth and round with a plummy palate and liquorice-tinged finish, it works with everything from pizza to pasta.
