Chenin Blanc, Semillon, Colombar
75cl * 13% ABV * Swartland, South Africa
Wine runs in Adi Badenhorst's veins: his grandfather was a grower in Constantia and his father worked at the Buitenverwachting estate, where Adi made his first wine at the age of 13. Now based in Swartland, he is part of South Africa's New Wave of 'trad-experimentalist' winemaking.
Partly skin contact, partly carbonic maceration, Adi previously used to blend these components into the straight Secateurs, but in the last few vintages, they've chosen to bottle them alone to create Secateurs 'Riviera', a tenuous and knowingly cheeky nod to the vineyards proximity to a river. This orange wine has more of a golden, pinkish hue and a beautifully complex aroma of grapefruit, quince, and spice flavours. The mouthfeel is grippy with a refreshing tannin structure that goes beautifully with an array of foods from roasted or barbecued to salads and picnics.
