Syrah
75cl * Vegan * 13% ABV * Cote Rotie, France
Yves Cuilleron took over the reins as the 4th generation vigneron in 1987 and has since built up a formidable reputation. He is based in Chavanay, just south of Condrieu, and now owns and leases over 75 hectares plus a fantastic new purpose-built and temperature controlled cellar.
In the centre of the Côte-Rôtie appellation, in the municipality of Ampuis, stands the locality of “Bonnivières”, a beautiful east-facing hillside planted entirely with Syrah grapes. Its aspect preserves freshness in the grapes and is partly planted with old vines. Treatments are limited as much as possible depending on the weather, with no use of pesticides, only organic fertilisers to preserve biodiversity.
After eighteen months ageing in oak barrels, Les Bonnivières is a complex, profound wine with a nose of dark fruits, spice, tobacco and a faint roasted edge. Clean and pure on the palate, revealing a rich, rounded style. It has a long powerful finish with silky tannins. Pair with game or other strong meat e.g. pavé of beef in a mustard-grain crust.
