Shiraz * 75cl * 14.5% ABV * Cape Town, South Africa
The Graaff family have played a defining role in the South African political, social and business landscape for over three generations. Sir De Villiers Graaff, 4th Baronet now oversees the estate and is responsible for opening De Grendel's acclaimed restaurant, as well as launching a solar farm - this is an exciting winery with a long history and a promising future. The 2017 vintage was consistently warm and dry up until December, when some much needed rain cooled the vineyards down necessary for that crucial balance between flavour intensity and fresh acidity. Post-fermentation barrel maturation took placed over 13 months in 10% new American oak and 10% new French oak, adding warm spices and giving the final wine a decadent smoothness. It exhibits perfumed floral notes, ripe plums and cherries, milk chocolate and freshly cracked pepper through to the soft and voluptuous palate. Drink now or cellar carefully for up to 10 years. Pair with richly reduced meat dishes, such as honey-glazed gammon or slow-braised game.
