"Mother Nature is becoming more capricious and more challenging with every passing year," so begins the 2017 vintage report from Château de Beaucastel. This was the driest year for three decades, yet it was a year where there was "exceptionally little work required in the vineyard". Instead, time was needed in the cellar to carefully blend the precious amounts of juice they had. The result: a tiny quantity of fantastic wines that are already showing beautifully, but with rich potential.
The flagship wine. Production is down 40% this year, but in the same league as the stunning 2016 (perhaps better). A youthful, forward nose of cassis, dark fruit and herbes de Provence. Super lush with soft tannins, but sufficient enough to age. Approachable, plump and full. Exactly what you look for in top-drawer, age-worthy Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
