Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Cabernet Franc/Petit Verdot * 75cl * 13.5% ABV * Bordeaux, France
Talbot is one of the most popular estates with a UK audience, presumably in part because it's named after a fifteenth century Earl of Shrewsbury, but also because it's easy to remember and pronounce. In the last century, it has been owned by the prestigious Cordier wine family and it has enjoyed a reputation for being a dependable property for both investors and drinkers. A superb and reliable Saint-Julien, rich and aromatic with plenty of stuffing.
The 2017 Talbot was picked from 18 to 4 October using manual and optical sorting, matured in 50% new oak. It has a relatively light but well-defined, floral bouquet, pressed flower filtering through that blackberry and boysenberry scents, a little clove and bay leaf lending complexity as it opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but firm tannin that frame the slightly savory black fruit, just a little earthiness developing towards the finish. It is a classic Talbot really, exactly what you would expect for the vintage. Drink 2020-2036.” 90/92 Points, Neal Martin, vinous.com, May 2018
