Malvasia/Viura blend * 75cl * 12.5% ABV * Rioja, Spain
For over 130 years, the Lopez de Heredia families have been producing their unique, highly-regarded wines in Rioja, and today the winery is run by Maria and her sister Mercedes, brother Julio and father Pedro. Wines are aged in oak barrels underground and later in bottle in their legendary cellars - the cobwebs really are something else. Unusually, vintages are blended as much as legally allowed, allowing for little vintage variation and a 'house style', in much the same way that Champagne is produced.
A legendary white Rioja: extremely complex, spicy, nutty and herbal thanks to six years of oak ageing. Lemon and orange peel mixed with green tea and kumquat and plenty of saline character. Oxidative in style, a bit like a Manzanilla sherry.
