Merlot * 75cl * 13.5% ABV * Bordeaux, France
This is an intruiging, modern-style Pomerol from Jean-Philippe Janouiex. We're rather lucky to have this at Taurus - only three to five thousand bottles are produced each year, so most suppliers have to beg for an allocation. Although full and plump on the nose, this is very fresh and pure with a lovely mineral streak to it. Note the quirky, yet gorgeous label.
"A beautifully characteristic and complex spiced fruitcake-style aroma immediately evokes the best of Pomerol. There’s a ripeness and caramelised richness to the aromas that can only come from a great Bordeaux year such as 2015. That suggests that the wine is going to be a tannic, dark monster, but that’s never Jean-Philipp Janoueix’s style of winemaking. This is a poised, pure and fresh Merlot, that has ripe fruit overlaid with a graphite, pencil-lead, mineral edge, with lasting, dry, fine and long tannins that support and balance the underlying spicy richness of red summer fruit flavours. This is a long way removed from the extracted and over-done Pomerol styles of yesteryear, yet this wine easily has enough depth of fruit and supporting acidity to last for a considerable time in the cellar. Delicious now, even at this very young stage, and with a promise of even greater flavours to come." Rob MacCulloch MW
