Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc Blend * 37.5cl * 14% ABV * Sauternes, France
This is quite possibly one of the most famous wines in the world - renowned for being the ultimate pudding wine. We've been lucky enough here at Taurus to try quite a few of the vintages over the years, including the much lauded 2001 - and here, finally, we are stocking it. We've waited until now as the 2011 is the first vintage, we feel, to match up to 2001 in its freshness, complexity and darn right amazingness.
So why was 2011 so good? It had about a month longer of good weather than the average growing season, enabling the wine makers to capture a much broader spectrum of flavours and aromas - varietal, floral, fruity etc. The winemakers at Yquem believe the 2011 is the archetype of 21st century Yquem - with attractive freshness and an 'ethereal' side that provides a subtle balance to the texture and volume on the palate.
Like its predecessors, the 2011 will keep for decades - so if you're patient, do lay it down for a while. However, for once, impatience might be rewarded as the winemakers believe that drinking this wine now will mean you don't miss out on 'any of the facets' of this amazingly complex and fresh dessert wine.
