Chardonnay * 75cl * 13% ABV * Cape of Good Hope, South Africa
One of the most southerly wine Estates in Africa and one of the closest to the sea – Hamilton Russell has pioneered viticulture and winemaking in the beautiful, cool, maritime Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation, just behind the old fishing village of Hermanus (in fact right next to the Southern Right vineyard!).
This is a lovely creamy, rich Chardonnay with great vibrant tropical fruit that is allowed to shine due to the winery using top-quality oak - in fact they use the same cooperage as Domaine Romanée Conti (and getting onto barrel makers of that quality's list can take generations!)
All the grapes for this wine are selectively hand harvested at optimal ripeness and vinified with minimal handling in a very traditional way - that way the real flavour of the grape comes through and the wine's expression stays true to its origin and the particular vintage. Years of soil research have lead to the winery only using 52 hectares of stony, clay-rich Bokkeveld shale-derived soils - perfect terroir for Chardonnay.
