The company we now know as Louis Roederer was founed in 1776 as Dubois Pere & Fils, changing its name in 1833 when the young Louis inherited the estate from his uncle. The house is perhaps best-known for Cristal (bottled in clear crystal and a flat punt), their prestige cuvee that became famous due to its associations with the Russian Imperial Court. The grapes for the whole range of Roederer Champagnes are largely sourced from their own vineyards, which guarantees that only the highest quality fruit ends up in the final blend. This Brut Reserve comprises a blend of two parts Pinot Noir to one part Chardonnay and a dash of Pinot Meunier.
With a tremendous reputation for consistency, Louis Roederer Brut Reserve NV is widely regarded as one of the top non-vintage Champagnes, which is all the more remarkable for the price. Its elegance and complexity is in part from their barrel-ageing a high proportion of the blend; adding up to one-third of cask-aged reserve wine to the final blend; and the four years' maturation the wine spends in bottle before disgorgement. Rich and full-bodied, structured and elegant, the Roederer style sits somewhere between creaminess and toastiness, whilst never losing its sense of mineral tension. The Brut Reserve is a perfect foil to indulgent seafood dishes - crab, lobster, oysters - or anything lightly fried.
