Mourvedre/Syrah/Granache Blend * 75cl * 14.5% ABV * California, USA

It’s the norm now for wines to be made and labelled “varietally”. Yet this is actually an invention from California in the 1960s, when drugs were cheap and thought processes random. Most red wines before the ‘60s were made from a blend of red grapes and this remains the case in two of France’s greatest wine regions – Bordeaux and the Rhône Valley. Why make wine from a blend of grapes? For the same reasons that a slow cooked casserole works so well – all the ingredients complement each other and fuse together to create a more enjoyable whole.

This is a truly delightful blend of 40% Mourvedre, 33% Syrah and 27% Grenache, made in Amador County, California. Rest assured, this is not a modern day version of the hippy dream made by a 1960s refugee – Bill Easton at Terre Rouge is strongly influenced by Rhône Valley-style wines and has years of award winning winemaking experience to show for his intelligent endeavours. This is that rare thing from California: a very carefully assembled, balanced, complex, dry red wine, with a restrained, delicate use of oak maturation. Think of this wine as a less expensive Châteauneuf-du-Pape that’s got lost in a hippy colony in a sunnier climate, if you like. It’s also ideal to match with a slow-cooked casserole.
