Viura Blend * 75cl * Vegan * 13% ABV * Rioja & Jerez, Spain
CVNE decided to bring back this style of wine, as it was last seen in the 1980s. Fresh, fine and bone dry, this wine not only has a fair amount of barrel-aging for a white, but it also has a small percentage of something rather special added... 10 points if you spotted that it's Manzanilla Sherry!
The sherry adds structure to the wine and integrates amazingly well with the white Rioja base. CVNE had to seek permission from the Rioja appellation to create this recipe back in the early 20th century and when they were researching it they could onl find one bottle of the 1979 vintage left! The re-employed their old (ie in his 80s) winemaker, Ezquiel Garda, who had worked at the winery from the 1940s to the 1980s to make sure it was made just right for this 21st century remake.
A staff favourite and fantastic as an apéritif wine with salted charcuterie, olives and nuts or with light fish and chicken dishes.
'Harkening back to the 1950s, this mainly Viura blend boasts the addition of Manzanilla Sherry and is aged on its lees on old oak vats for eight months. Unique, vital and complex, showing distinct oxidative flor notes of fresh almonds, camomile and tangy salinity on the textural palate, along with orchard fruit freshness. Fabulous length and balance - and exceptional ageability.' Decanter Magazine, October 2018 - listed as one of the magazine's recommendations.
