Viura Blend * 75cl * Vegan * 13% ABV * Rioja & Jerez, Spain
CVNE (usually pronounced COO-NAY) only recently re-introduced this 'Monopole Clasico' 1970s white Rioja back into its range. Throughout the 20th century, CVNE have remained at the forefront of the Rioja trade and is still controlled by the direct descendants of the founding family. This historical wine is a blend of Viura (so far so normal) with a small percentage of Manzanilla sherry, developed under a layer of 'flor'. Light, crisp orchard and citrus fruit notes combine with a certain waxiness and herbaceousness. The sherry component adds an element of chamomile, dried fruit and a light saltiness to the palate. A great match with grilled white meats, root vegetables or simple assorted tapas dishes.
'Harkening back to the 1950s, this mainly Viura blend boasts the addition of Manzanilla Sherry and is aged on its lees on old oak vats for eight months. Unique, vital and complex, showing distinct oxidative flor notes of fresh almonds, camomile and tangy salinity on the textural palate, along with orchard fruit freshness. Fabulous length and balance - and exceptional ageability.' Decanter Magazine, October 2018 - listed as one of the magazine's recommendations.
