Chardonnay * 75cl * 13% ABV * Burgundy, France
Jean-Baptiste is only 30-odd years old, yet has been the winemaker at this tiny 6ha domaine in Burgundy since 2000 after inheriting it from his grandfather. His wines are typically powerful Rully, but unlike most Rully, they have a real finesse, perfume and aroma and could easily be mistaken for somewhere far more prestigious.
About 30% new oak gives a stylishness perhaps lacking from run-of-the-mill Rully, making this a Rully estate that competes with Côte d’Or quality in terms of ‘blind tasting’ perceptions. Jean-Baptiste is driven by quality, so despite the tiny size of the domaine, ¼ of the production is sold off to bulk suppliers to ensure that the domaine wines use nothing but the best quality fruit. The estate is also fully organic, to further ensure both perfect vine health but also fruit with more extravagant flavours. The wines are bottled after 10 months in oak.
