Rkatsiteli/Welschriesling * Organic * 75cl * 13% ABV * Xinjiang, China
We have been hugely impressed by the premium wines coming out of China over the past few years. The Puchang Winery is located in the Turpan Valley, which shares a latitude with some of the world's most acclaimed wine producing regions, including Bordeaux - they have been making wine here for almost 800 hundred years. The winemaking team includes Loris Tartaglia, Gerard Colin (Chateau Lafite consultant) and Fonteini Kolyva. The main variety in this blend, Rkatsiteli, originally heralds from Georgia and was introduced to China in the 1950s. Here it is blended with Welschriesling, a high acid, sweetly scented variety. The winery practises low-intervention winemaking and is certified as organic.
The result here is intensely (but not overtly) perfumed with floral notes, ripe grapefruit, citrus peel and warm spices. On the palate, however, it is relatively light on its feet, with some very refreshing acidity and crispness. Beguilingly delicious, this seems at the same time very familiar and rather unique. A versatile food partner, this could be enjoyed with baked cheeses, lightly spiced Levantine dishes or seafood.
