Gamay * 75cl * 13% ABV * Beaujolais, France
Chateau Thivin, the oldest estate on Mont Brouilly (the site of an ancient volcano), has become the benchmark domaine of the Côte de Brouilly. South-facing vineyards are planted only with Gamay vines that average 50 years of age. Lovely, complex floral notes mingle with juicy, summer fruit: iris and peonies, wild strawberry and cherry. Silky, with a long, pepper-spice finish. Charming in its youth with the potential to gain elegance and complexity with age, it would particularly suit rustic French countryside dishes: pates, cold cuts, and cheese. The wine is beautifully summarised by American super-importer Kermit Lynch thus: "Thivin is a country squire who is not afraid to get his boots muddy. Handsome, virile, earthy - and an aristocrat".
