Grenache, Mourvedre * 75cl * 14.5% ABV * Rhone, France
To celebrate the 100 years since the planting of the most beautiful plot in the domaine, the Brunel family decided to create a special cuvee issued specifically from this plot. Debatably one of the best wines every produced by the estate, it has been pitted as the same level as the legendary 1998 and 2010 vintages. This is a seriously silky, sensuous number showing no signs of being over cooked or lacking in purity. Like many of the 2016s, this will go down as one of the 'great' years of the Rhone Valley. Extraordinarily complex and rich, this would make a great partner to game and strongly-flavoured beef dishes. Drinking now to 2030.
"When one comes across a wine like this in a blind tasting, it's human nature to second-guess the intial reaction. Yet every time I went back to this wine, I came away astounded by its complexity and balance. Yes, it's full-bodied, but it's also light on its feet, a lithe vinous gymnast, wiry and strong yet graceful and loaded with nuance. The soaring aromas and flavours range from raspberries and cherries through to roses, black tea, thyme and lavender in thsi incredible wine. I suspect it will rival the legendary 1990 and 1998 versions. 100 Points, Wine Advocate".
