Delas Saint-Esprit Cotes-du-Rhone 2008 (Rhone, France)

Delas Saint-Esprit Cotes-du-Rhone 2008 (Rhone, France)

Made with 75% Syrah and 25% Grenache grapes, this wine is loaded with black fruit, red berries and spice with a touch of oak. Sweet tannins and beautiful acidity culminating in a mouthwatering medium length finish that makes your tastebuds beg for a second taste.

“The news that the powerful wine writer Robert Parker deems 2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape "the greatest vintage I have tasted" may have wafted straight over the heads of many ordinary drinkers...... That's not to say they're [2007 Rhones] are all fabulous (nothing ever is), but 2007 Rhônes are now hitting the shelves, and here are a few worth seeking out........ Another is the deeper, darker, growlier, syrah-based Delas Côtes du Rhône Saint-Esprit 2007 (around £8.99; Taurus Wines, tauruswines.co.uk), though it is less for tippling than one to accompany barbecued lamb chops....”

Domaine de Durban, Muscat de Beaumes de Venise 37.5cl
(Rhone, France)

Domaine de Durban, Muscat de Beaumes de Venise 37.5cl
(Rhone, France)

Durban claims that their Muscats are so much more aromatic and more delicately coloured than any other Beaumes de Venise because they use a very unique form of the variety .Whatever the reason this is the wine that the critics universally agree to be the best and is full of wonderful orangey / pear flavours. Sweet without being cloying, within France it is frequently used as an aperitif as much as a desert wine. Ideal with lighter puddings such as meringue

Chateau Beauchene, Cotes du Rhone , Premier Terroir 2007
(Rhône, France)

Chateau Beauchene, Cotes du Rhone ," Premier Terroir" 2007
(Rhône, France)

From a vineyard immediately bordering the area of Chateauneuf-du-Pape's appellation, between the communes or Orange and Chateauneuf-du-Pape (all that separates this field and Chateauneuf-du-Pape is a main road.) Significantly it has the same Galet stones (large round potato sized pebbles) which give Chateauneuf its unique character as they absorb sunlight during the day and release heat at night bringing on the ripening of the grapes.

Beauchene isn't completely organic but practises "agriculture raisonnee", a philosophy of production that guarantees a top quality product whilst at the same time ensuring a better respect of the environment, through the use of traditional techniques; horse ploughing, hand harvesting and hand sorting by each grape-picker.

Deep ruby in colour with aromas of ripe red fruits and bilberries which continue as red fruit flavours on the palate that develop to hints of raspberries and blackcurrant.

A Silver Medal Winner at Decanter World Wine Awards May 2008 and Gold Medal at Concours General de Macon April 2008.

"It's a good idea to have a few bottles stashed away for unexpected guests. They need to be of reasonable quality, but there's no need to break the bank.

For reds, try the spicy, bitter cherry Châteauneuf-du-Pape-in-all-but -name 2007 Château Beauchêne Premier Terroir Côtes du Rhône..." Jonny Ray's Christmas Wine List (Telegraph)

Chateau Beauchene Les Sens de Syrah 2005
(Rhone, France)

Chateau Beauchene Les Sens de Syrah 2005
(Rhone, France)

Considerably heavier than it's sibling with a more intense colour with some purplish highlights, a bouquet of red fruits and wild flowers, developing to stone fruits and leather by ageing. On the palate it is floral and fruity, with a harmonious and well-balanced tannins. Powerful and intense, it displays a great length. This wine is in perfect harmony with red meat and game dishes, and is also the perfect accompaniment to all cheeses. Like the premier terroir it will improve in the cellar and peaks about 5 to 7 years post vintage.

Winner Silver Medal at Syrah du Monde Concours May 2007 (International) and awarded 88 points by Robert Parker's Wine Spectator Magazine

Guigal Gigondas 2006 (Rhone, France)

Guigal Gigondas 2006 (Rhone, France)

This Gigondas is the perfect example of a great southern Rhone wine. The Grenache exhibits the ripeness of the fruits and the charming texture of the wine, the Syrah is showing its true colour and peppery aromas and eventually, the Mourvedre is expressing the big tannins and the massive texture of this superb wine. Vinified in the purest tradition, this wine is opulent now and will age well for the next 8 to 10 years. This wine goes well with red meat, game and cheese.
