Vega del Rayo Rioja 2007 (Rioja, Spain)
A delicious modern style Rioja with a deep dark colour, ripe plum and cherry fruit aromas. On the palate it is richly flavoured and substantial with the fruit dominant and a smoky, spicy dimension from six months in oak. Perfect with red meats like beef or lamb. Packed in the traditional wire ‘cage’ of Rioja that was originally an anti-fraud measure to prevent Barcelonan restaurateurs refilling expensive bottles with cheap wine.
CVNE Rioja Crianza 2006 (Spain )
Bright cherry colour wirh some violet nuances. On the nose, red berry aromas remain over the oaky and balsamic notes froms its aging in wood. It shows and elegant, yet very lively wine with some spicy notes and a balanced acidity. The name derives from the winery initials. At the beginning a red "clarete" wine was made as a fine wine in the style of the Bordeaux "claret" produced by the great chateaux's of the Medoc. This style of wine was in demand from the end of the 19th century, when the French wine industry was destroyed by phylloxera and a substitute was needed. This wine, formerly known as 'Tercer Ano' or '3rd year', is today called 'Crianza'. Its success motivated the production of Reserva wines. Nowadays, under the Cune brand we find a Crianza, Reserva and Rose wines. The 'Cune Rosado' is produced entirely from red Garnacha grape variety. The wines are the modern expression of traditional wine making in Rioja Alta.
Rioja Puerta Vieja Crianza 2006 (Rioja, Spain)
A relatively light and mature style of Rioja by Bodegas Riojanas that makes it ideal for drinking on its own or with food. As a "party trick", the Winery often serves dinner guests this wine, lightly chilled, with John Dory
Clos dels Codols 2002 (Montsant, Spain)
Aromas of ripe red fruits bound from the glass of this full bodiesd but very smooth and oaky deep red/purple colcoured wine. The palate has a distinctive slightly menthol edge to it.
Vinedo No 8 Mazuelo2005 (Spain)
The funkiest of the Vinedo range. This wine has such dense sweet fruit you mistake it for the new world. The nose shows blackberry and mineral aromas and the palate is gently spiced with soft tannis and well integrated oak. The grapes for Vinedo No 8 are cultivated on 50 year old vines and the wine is only made in outstanding vintages. The hand harvested grapes are sorted in September. The Maximum yield is limited to 31.5 hl/ha. Ideal with cold meats and stews.
Marques de Murrieta Rioja Reserva 2004 (Spain)
Made from 91% Tempranillo, 6% Garnacha, 3% Mazuelo. The grapes are picked manually and carried to the vineyard in small trucks. The grapes are destemmed and then fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. A vibrant red hue with an interesting nose of the blackberry fruit of tempranillo mixed with rather feral notes layered with honey, cinder toffee and vanilla ice cream of good quality oak. Young and bright on the palate, firm and defining acidity with fresh fruit. Goes well with all red meats and cured ham as well as grilled fish with rich sauces
Monte Real Reserva 2003 (Rioja, Spain)
Very mature, full bodied yet elegant - this is a dry Rioja in the classic Bodegas Riojanas style with a traditional leathery, gamey rioja nose and hints of orange peel and soft vanilla lead to a fully developed rich style.
Tres Picos Garnacha(2007) Spain
The grapes come from the vineyards that are between 35 and 40 years old. Located on uneven terrain at an altitude of 600 to 700 metres, these vineyards yield under four and a half tons of grapes per hectare. The wine is deep and cherry red in colour with a hint of purple. A bouquet of mature red fruits with floral notes that are typical of the best Garnachas. The palate is rich and well structured showing flavours of blackberries, strawberries and tones of leather, vanilla and a smoky burnt treacle tang. Perfectly combined with a sweet and pleasant tannin with a generous and balanced finish.
Marques de Riscal Reserva 2005 (Rioja, Spain)
Quite restrained on the nose, with medium-weight palate and light tannins. For some reason it always seems to taste better when served in Magnum. Subject to availability
Contino Vina del Olivo Rioja 2005 (Spain)
To pay homage to an approximately 1000 year old olive tree surrounded by vines, this wine was created. Manual harvesting of the better bunches of grapes out of the plot surrounding the olive tree were put in 20 kilo baskets to be transported to the winery to be fermented in 100 hecolitre French oak winemaking vats. Still fairly young, intensely coloured getting close to being black in the centre of the glass and with purple and violet shades. Persistent and intense aromas with cedar, spices and toasty hints over a fresh background of blackberries and plums. Fresh and fruity to the palate with an aftertaste where violets and red fruits stand out, well balanced, elegant and with firm tannins.
